A Case Study: How Project Management Guided Harvard Pilgrim Health Care from Near Collapse to #1

Speaker: Lisa A. DiTullio,
Director, Project Management Office

Speaker: Lisa A. DiTullio,
Director, Project Management Office Project management does not need to be complex or complicated to offer value to an organization’s success. In fact, keeping it simple allows companies to develop a project management competency that, over time, becomes part of the organizational culture. Hear how project management guided Harvard Pilgrim Health Care from state-supervised receivership to being the #1 Health Plan in America on the U.S. News & World Report/NCQA America’s Best Health Plans three years in a row and the highest rated plan in the Northeast for member satisfaction according to the JD Power and Associates 2007 National Health Insurance Plan Satisfaction Study. The story itself is compelling and a true account of project management implementation in a real setting, with real results.

As director of the project management office (PMO) at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, she’s a core member of the turnaround team for an organization that went from being placed in State-supervised receivership in 1999 to being the #1 Health Plan in America on the U.S. News & World Report/ NCQA America’s Best Health Plans three years in a row (2004 - 2006) and the Highest Rated Plan in the Northeast for member satisfaction according to the JD Power and Associates 2007 National Health Insurance Plan Satisfaction Study.

Today, Lisa’s a leading force in project management – both within Harvard Pilgrim and in the project management field She is the editor of ProjectBestPractices, a quarterly newsletter from ProjectWorld, and a contributor to PM Network Magazine. She’s also the author of Simple Solutions: How "Enterprise Project Management" Supported Harvard Pilgrim Health Care's Journey from Near Collapse to #1.

Decision Making Under Pressure
Inspiration and Peak Performance in Critic Situations From Those Who Have Survived Against All Odds

Speaker: Michael Tougias

Award winning author and lecturer Michael Tougias shares the lessons learned about goal attainment and decision-making under pressure from researching his two national best-sellers, Ten Hours Until Dawn, and Fatal Forecast, as well as from interviewing dozens of people who have overcome tremendous obstacles. This inspirational and interactive Power Point presentation first illustrates the survival stories Tougias has researched and then discusses the lessons learned.

Tougias (pronounced Toe-gis) is the author of 17 books who has conducted extensive research involving people who have survived disasters in the face of incredible odds. All of these individuals felt completely overwhelmed but quickly learned the secrets of channeling and managing their energy into proactive decisions that allowed them to survive. Tougias has learned that the techniques used by survivors can help all of us achieve our dreams, manage rapid organizational change, operate at peak performance, and lead more fulfilling, productive lives.

Among the topics Tougias discusses are:

Decisions:

•  The dangers of projecting past outcomes onto current situations
•  Pros and cons of decisions that are reversible
•  Adrenaline is the enemy
•  Team-work under duress
•  Giving up the illusion of "comfort"
•  The peril of "sticking to the plan"
•  The role of intuition in decision-making

Peak Performance & Fulfillment

•  The Worry Dilemma: we worry because we care, we worry about the wrong things
•  "Do the next right thing"
•  Be a "Super Tortoise" -- The power of little steps
•  The fallacy of "I'll be happy when..."
